On January 28, 1973, the Dodge City District Superintendent for the United Methodist Church called a meeting of United Methodist pastors and lay people to explore the possibility of establishing a new ministry in Southwest Kansas. There was a need for social services for the migrant population in the area. Workers in the sugar beet fields needed food and clothing, and they were bringing their children to the fields to work with them. A task force was created to meet the needs of these migrants. Initial funding came from the Kansas West Conference of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Mexican American Ministries (UMMAM) was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) on February 22, 1974.
In June of 1974, an Executive Minister was hired and the central office was located in Garden City. Community Developers were hired in Ulysses, Dodge City and Liberal in 1974, 1978 and 1984, respectively. In 1987, aided by a grant from the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund, UMMAM opened a family practice medical clinic. Branch clinics were later opened in Liberal, Ulysses and Dodge City. In 2008, a UMMAM dental clinic was started with one chair located in the Finney County Health Department. Later that year, a four chair clinic was opened in the St. Catherine Hospital Medical Building. In 2010, UMMAM expanded dental services and opened a dental clinic in Dodge City.
Currently, UMMAM is not only home to medical clinics, dental clinics and social services, but to numerous outreach programs as well. Those programs include:
Lifetime Smiles Oral Health Education
Early Detection Works
Southwest Kansas Diabetes Prevention and Control Program
